Postcards from Malthusia DAY THIRTY: Pippa Little

Sound

Into this silent morning

a tree-saw suddenly begins.

Someone in the village

is cutting down a tree,

one of the old ones, a beech

or ash. The noise

hurts. My heart says please

do not do this, not now.

But the sound goes on.

Pippa Little has been widely published in print and online. Her first two collections Overwintering (Carcanet) and Twist (Arc) were shortlisted for major prizes. Her third collection is forthcoming.
