Postcards from Malthusia DAY ONE: George Szirtes

It’s reality

at fault, they said. And it was

to blame as usual.

The moon was smirking.

The cat wore a strange sly look.

The cars spoke in code.

Not to be quite real

was normal. It was morning.

The hours were waking

on time, as normal.

George Szirtes’s most recent book is The Photographer at Sixteen. His last book of poetry was Mapping the Delta (2016) His next book of poetry is due in 2021.
