DAY SEVENTY-SIX – Edward Doegar

Exercising Honesty

It takes a certain amount of guts

I balance on the potential
Of an opinion
The circus act
Of conversation
Walking the tightrope
That well-trodden metaphor
Passing above
Each vested interest
Observing the two conventions
And apprehension
I lean towards the audience
To take my bearings
Regain my balance
Oh there you are
A little to the left
The wavering Ooos and Ahhs
Of dissent
And nodding agreement
That vertigo of inconsequence
As the rope goes slack
And I fall
Into the safety net provided

To really contemplate the cuts

Edward Doegar is a Complete Works fellow and his poems appear in the Bloodaxe anthology ‘Ten: The New Wave’.
